Endometriosis and Its Impact on the Uterus

Endometriosis is a medical condition whose causes and implications are not yet known or predictable. This condition is the growth of endometrial tissue (uterine lining) outside of its proper place. Places that are often found are in the abdominal cavity, pelvic cavity, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and in the uterine flesh itself (adenomyosis).

Various studies have been conducted and until now have not been able to explain the course of this disease. It should be noted that in general the symptoms of endometriosis can be menstrual pain, pain during intercourse, and infertility.

In the early stages, endometriosis is almost difficult to detect through physical examination or ultrasound, and blood tests. However, if this endometriosis cyst has developed, the doctor will be able to detect it through a transvaginal ultrasound examination.

One of the best ways to perform medical action on endometriosis is laparoscopy, which is a minimally invasive surgical technique that does not result in large surgical wounds.

If menstrual pain is excessive and is suspected to be caused by endometriosis, then the doctor can provide treatment by giving symptomatic therapy, namely reducing the amount or cycle of menstruation such as using birth control pills to suppress the amount of blood during menstruation.

Hormonal therapy can also be done with birth control injections to stop menstruation or IUDs (read: spirals) containing the hormone progesterone to suppress the amount of menstruation.

Endometriosis can also cause infertility in women, in this case, laparoscopy can increase the chance of pregnancy up to 70% within 12 months. But when pregnancy does not occur after 12 months, 20-40% of endometriosis will return within 5 years.

However, with medical help and proper treatment, women with endometriosis can still get pregnant, so if you experience the above symptoms and feel you have endometriosis, it would be a good idea to consult your trusted obstetrician to determine the right medical steps.
